ANU Diploma of Business and Economics: five aligned degrees

The Australian National University’s Diploma of Business and Economics provides a pathway into accounting, business administration, commerce, economics or finance. Each aligned bachelor degree has a listed progression GPA of 4.0. Students who complete the diploma and meet the requirements for aligned articulation can receive one year of credit towards their bachelor degree.

Which five degrees does it lead to?

The diploma aligns with the following ANU degrees:

Aligned bachelor degree Listed progression GPA
Bachelor of Accounting 4.0
Bachelor of Business Administration 4.0
Bachelor of Commerce 4.0
Bachelor of Economics 4.0
Bachelor of Finance 4.0

The shared GPA threshold means the required progression GPA does not distinguish these five options. The more useful question is which degree matches the subjects you want to study.

The credit arrangement applies to aligned articulation. Students may apply for a non-aligned bachelor degree after the diploma, but ANU assesses that application as it would for a student with one year of undergraduate study at ANU. Credit is assessed case by case, so changing to a non-aligned degree does not guarantee a full year of credit.

What does the diploma involve?

The diploma is an AQF Level 5 qualification completed over 12 months of full-time study: two semesters comprising eight courses. It includes ESEN1001 Academic Skills for University Study and level-1000 courses shared with bachelor students.

Teaching takes place in person at ANU’s Acton Campus in Canberra. There is no remote study option, and the current intake is Semester 1 only.

Delivery is through a wholly ANU-owned Pathways entity. Students are full ANU students from the start, with access to the same classes as bachelor peers and the same accommodation access as bachelor students.

Although the diploma is a qualification in its own right, ANU requires it to be packaged with a bachelor degree. It is not an entry option for applicants intending only to complete a standalone year.

Who is the pathway designed for?

The pathway is designed for applicants with a selection rank of 70–79.99, alongside other eligible entry backgrounds such as a graded AQF Certificate IV and the Work and Life Experience Scheme.

Applicants with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for a bachelor degree and cannot commence a Pathway Diploma. The diploma has no subject prerequisites, and adjustment factors do not apply.

For direct English entry, the requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or an equivalent qualification. This is the same English requirement as undergraduate entry.

Admission to the diploma and progression into a bachelor degree are separate stages: applicants must meet the entry requirements first, then achieve the required diploma results for their aligned degree.

What does the quoted tuition cover?

The 2027 indicative annual tuition fee is AUD 57,640. This is the diploma’s indicative annual tuition, not the total cost of the diploma-plus-bachelor sequence.

Financial planning therefore needs to cover the packaged sequence. ANU’s pathway information also states that applicants must demonstrate financial capacity for the diploma and bachelor studies.

What support is included?

Support begins with enrolment counselling and onboarding before classes start. During the diploma, students receive one-on-one academic advice, monitoring of engagement and progress, and proactive intervention where needed.

The support model also includes referrals to campus services and assistance with the transition from diploma to bachelor study. These services support students’ progress; they do not replace the academic requirements for articulation.

How are applications submitted?

Applicants studying onshore who are completing Australian Year 12, the IB or NCEA Level 3 apply through UAC. Other international applicants apply through ANU Application Manager / Studylink.

The Diploma of Business and Economics has UAC code 131144 and CRICOS code 121405F. For international students, the packaged arrangement provides one Confirmation of Enrolment for the diploma and another for the bachelor degree, supporting one visa application.

The key planning points are the intended bachelor degree, eligibility for diploma entry, English results, the progression GPA and funding for the full study sequence.
