ANU Diploma of Computing: entry and Bachelor progression

The ANU Diploma of Computing is a pathway to the Bachelor of Computing at The Australian National University. Students who complete the Diploma with a GPA of at least 4.0 can progress to the aligned Bachelor with one year of credit, equivalent to 48 units. The Diploma takes 12 months full-time and is taught in person at ANU’s Acton Campus in Canberra.

Who the Diploma is for

The Diploma’s selection-rank entry threshold is 70. The pathway is intended for applicants with a selection rank of 70–79.99; applicants with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for a Bachelor degree and cannot commence a Pathway Diploma.

There are no subject prerequisites for Diploma entry, and adjustment factors do not apply. Other entry routes include a graded AQF Certificate IV and the Work and Life Experience Scheme.

For applicants using overseas school qualifications, the following are examples of scores equivalent to the Diploma’s selection-rank threshold:

Qualification Score at the Diploma entry threshold
Gao-Kao, Shanghai 446 out of 660
Gao-Kao, Hainan 608 out of 900
Gao-Kao, other regions 506 out of 750
HKDSE 11
GCE A-Levels, best three subjects 10
GCE A-Levels, best four subjects 12
SAT 1090

These are selected equivalencies, rather than a complete qualification list.

What students study

The Diploma comprises eight courses across two semesters. It includes ESEN1001 Academic Skills for University Study and level-1000 courses shared with Bachelor students.

Students are full ANU students from the start. The program is delivered by a wholly ANU-owned Pathways entity, with classes on the Acton Campus. There is no remote study option, and the current intake is Semester 1 only.

Support includes pre-commencement enrolment counselling, one-to-one academic advice throughout the Diploma and monitoring of engagement and progress. Students also receive support with the transition from the Diploma to the Bachelor and have the same access to accommodation as Bachelor students.

How progression to the Bachelor of Computing works

The aligned degree is the Bachelor of Computing. The progression requirement is completion of the Diploma with a GPA of at least 4.0, with 48 units of credit towards that degree.

Path after the Diploma Academic requirement and credit
Aligned Bachelor of Computing Diploma completion with a GPA of at least 4.0; one year of credit, equivalent to 48 units
A different, non-aligned Bachelor Assessed as an applicant with one year of undergraduate study at ANU; credit assessed case by case

Changing degree direction can therefore change how much completed study counts towards the new program. The one-year credit arrangement applies to the aligned pathway; it is not guaranteed when changing to a non-aligned degree.

Although the Diploma is a standalone AQF Level 5 qualification, applicants must enter it as part of a packaged Diploma-to-Bachelor sequence. It is not available for an intended Diploma-only year of study. Financial capacity must cover the Diploma and Bachelor sequence.

English requirements and indicative tuition

Direct entry requires IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0, or an equivalent result. This is the same English requirement as undergraduate entry.

ANU ELICOS can be packaged with the pathway, although the Guide states that ELICOS applications for Semester 1 2027 are closed.

The 2027 indicative annual tuition fee is AUD 57,640 for the Diploma of Computing. This is the Diploma’s indicative annual tuition, not the total cost of the Diploma and Bachelor sequence.

Which application route applies

Applicants studying onshore who are completing Australian Year 12, the IB or NCEA Level 3 apply through UAC. Other international applicants apply through ANU Application Manager / Studylink.

For international students, the package provides one Confirmation of Enrolment for the Diploma and another for the Bachelor, supporting one visa application.

The key details for an application are the qualification being used for entry, the corresponding academic score, English-language results and the intended Bachelor of Computing pathway. The Diploma of Computing’s CRICOS code is 121404G.
