ANU Pathway Diploma IELTS requirements and ELICOS timing

Direct entry to ANU Pathway Diplomas requires IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0, or an equivalent English qualification. This is the same English requirement as undergraduate entry. ANU ELICOS can be packaged with a pathway, but ELICOS applications for Semester 1 2027 are closed, according to the ANU guide information available on 3 November 2026.

IELTS 6.5 overall must include the minimum band scores

An overall score of 6.5 meets the direct-entry English threshold only when every band is at least 6.0. An overall 6.5 with a band of 5.5 does not meet that requirement.

The Diploma offers a different academic entry route into an aligned ANU Bachelor degree. It does not lower the direct-entry English threshold.

English route IELTS overall Minimum in each band
Direct entry to a Pathway Diploma 6.5 6.0
10-week ELICOS entry 6.0 5.5
20-week ELICOS entry 5.5 5.0

The ELICOS scores are entry thresholds for the relevant English course. They are not direct-entry scores for the Diploma, and meeting them does not establish that an intake is available.

The Diploma deadline does not reopen ELICOS

ANU Pathway Diplomas currently have a Semester 1 intake only. For international applicants, the Semester 1 2027 Diploma application deadline is 15 December. That deadline is separate from ELICOS availability: the guide states that ELICOS applications for Semester 1 2027 have already closed.

For an applicant below the direct-entry English threshold, the remaining Diploma application period should therefore not be read as an opportunity to add a Semester 1 2027 English course.

The information available does not establish a later ELICOS application window. When assessing a study timeline, the relevant details are:

  • The English result being used for admission.
  • Whether every IELTS band meets the required minimum.
  • Whether an English course is included in the proposed package.
  • The English course completion date and the Diploma commencement date.

English eligibility and academic eligibility are separate

Meeting the IELTS requirement does not establish academic eligibility. The Pathway Diploma route is intended for applicants with a selection rank of 70–79.99, alongside other eligible entry categories. Applicants with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for a Bachelor degree and cannot commence a Pathway Diploma.

The programs are delivered in person at ANU’s Acton Campus in Canberra. There is no remote option. Each Diploma takes 12 months full-time across two semesters, comprising eight courses.

Although the Diploma is a standalone AQF Level 5 qualification, admission must be packaged with a Bachelor degree. It is not an entry route for applicants intending to study only the one-year Diploma.

Bachelor progression has its own requirements

The Diploma can lead into an aligned Bachelor degree with one year, or 48 units, of credit, subject to the relevant progression requirements.

For example, progression from the Diploma of Computing to the Bachelor of Computing requires a Diploma GPA of 4.0. Within the Diploma of Politics and International Relations, the Bachelor of Asian Studies requires 4.0, while the listed International Relations, International Security Studies, Political Science and Public Policy degrees require 4.6.

Changing to a non-aligned Bachelor involves a separate assessment. Credit is considered case by case, so a full year of credit is not guaranteed when changing programs.
