ANU Pathway Diploma entry: selection rank 70 and direct Bachelor entry
The Australian National University (ANU) sets a minimum selection rank of 70 for its Pathway Diplomas, with the rank-based pathway intended for applicants in the 70–79.99 range. Applicants with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for Bachelor entry and cannot commence a Pathway Diploma. The Diploma route also has English language requirements and must be packaged with a Bachelor degree.
Selection rank determines which entry route applies
| Selection rank | Entry route |
|---|---|
| Below 70 | Below the stated minimum selection rank for Pathway Diploma entry |
| 70–79.99 | Within the stated selection-rank range for the Pathway Diploma route |
| 80 or above | Apply for Bachelor entry; Pathway Diploma commencement is not available |
ANU does not apply adjustment factors to Pathway Diploma entry. The Diplomas have no subject prerequisites, but direct English entry requires IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0, or an equivalent qualification.
A selection rank of 70 is an entry threshold. Progression from the Diploma into an aligned Bachelor depends on the Diploma GPA required for that degree.
How school results correspond to selection rank 70
ANU’s Pathway Diploma guide includes qualification equivalents for the selection rank 70 threshold. These are selected entries from that table.
| Qualification | Score corresponding to selection rank 70 |
|---|---|
| Gao-Kao — Shanghai, out of 660 | 446 |
| Gao-Kao — Hainan, out of 900 | 608 |
| Gao-Kao — other, out of 750 | 506 |
| HKDSE | 11 |
| IB — Australian schools, November 2022 onwards | 26.75 |
| IB — overseas, or Australian schools before November 2022 | 27 |
| GCE A-Levels — best three | 10 |
| GCE A-Levels — best four | 12 |
| SAT | 1090 |
| ACT | 20 |
The qualification and its applicable category matter: the table distinguishes between Gao-Kao scoring systems and between IB assessment categories.
ANU also lists entry routes involving a graded AQF Certificate IV, specified senior secondary qualifications with SAT, and the Work and Life Experience Scheme.
The Diploma is packaged with a Bachelor degree
ANU Pathway Diplomas are standalone AQF Level 5 qualifications, but applicants cannot enter with the intention of taking only a one-year Diploma. The admission route requires a Diploma–Bachelor package and financial capacity for that sequence.
Each Diploma takes 12 months full-time, across two semesters and eight courses. Teaching is in person at ANU’s Acton Campus in Canberra, with no remote option. The current intake is Semester 1 only.
Students are ANU students from commencement. Their study includes ESEN1001 Academic Skills for University Study and level-1000 courses shared with Bachelor students. The programs are delivered by a wholly ANU-owned Pathways entity.
Bachelor progression depends on the aligned degree
The aligned Bachelor determines the GPA required for articulation.
| Pathway Diploma | Aligned Bachelor degree | Required Diploma GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Business and Economics | Bachelor of Accounting; Bachelor of Business Administration; Bachelor of Commerce; Bachelor of Economics; Bachelor of Finance | 4.0 |
| Computing | Bachelor of Computing | 4.0 |
| Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of Asian Studies | 4.0 |
| Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of International Relations; Bachelor of International Security Studies; Bachelor of Political Science; Bachelor of Public Policy | 4.6 |
The aligned pathway provides one year of credit, equivalent to 48 units, on articulation. For applicants comparing routes, the useful distinction is between the selection rank needed to enter the Diploma and the GPA needed to progress into the intended Bachelor.
Students may apply for a non-aligned Bachelor after the Diploma. That application is assessed in the same way as an application from a student with one year of undergraduate study at ANU. Credit is assessed case by case, so changing programs does not guarantee a full year of credit.
