Studying an ANU Pathway Diploma at Acton: classes and academic support
ANU Pathway Diploma students are full ANU students from day one, studying in person at the Acton campus in Canberra. Academic support includes enrolment counselling before classes begin, one-on-one advice throughout the Diploma, progress monitoring and help with the transition to a Bachelor degree. There is no remote study option.
Classes include courses shared with Bachelor students
The ANU Pathway Diplomas combine ESEN1001 Academic Skills for University Study with level-1000 courses shared with Bachelor students. Students therefore take university courses alongside Bachelor peers while receiving the Diploma’s academic support.
The program runs for 12 months full-time across two semesters and includes eight courses. It is delivered by a wholly ANU-owned Pathways entity.
The available Diplomas are:
- Diploma of Business and Economics
- Diploma of Computing
- Diploma of Politics and International Relations
Each is a standalone AQF Level 5 qualification within a pathway to an aligned Bachelor degree. For applicants, however, the Diploma must be packaged with a Bachelor degree; it cannot be commenced with the intention of studying only the one-year Diploma.
Support starts before enrolment and continues through the Diploma
The support model covers getting started, managing academic progress and preparing to move into a Bachelor degree.
| Stage | Support provided |
|---|---|
| Before commencement | Enrolment counselling and onboarding |
| During the Diploma | One-on-one academic advice |
| As study progresses | Monitoring of engagement and progress, with proactive intervention |
| When campus support is needed | Referrals and help connecting with campus services |
| At the Diploma-to-Bachelor transition | Support with articulation into a Bachelor degree |
Individual academic advice gives students a way to discuss their study progress throughout the Diploma. Progress monitoring also means support can be proactive, rather than depending entirely on a student asking for help.
The referral role connects students with campus services. It should not be read as a promise that every service is delivered directly by the Pathways team.
Academic support does not replace progression requirements
An aligned Bachelor pathway can carry one year of credit, equivalent to 48 units. Progression still depends on meeting the requirements for the intended degree.
The required Diploma GPA varies by destination. For example, the Bachelor of Computing requires a GPA of 4.0, while the Bachelor of International Relations requires 4.6. Academic advice and transition support help students plan around these requirements; they do not guarantee progression.
Changing to a non-aligned Bachelor degree follows a different assessment process. Students may apply after the Diploma and are assessed like other applicants with one year of undergraduate study at ANU. Credit is considered case by case, so a full year of credit is not guaranteed when changing programs.
Accommodation access does not guarantee a room
Pathway Diploma students have the same access to accommodation as Bachelor students. This describes access, not a guaranteed accommodation offer.
For anyone planning to move to Canberra, accommodation remains a separate part of preparing for in-person study. Full ANU student status and academic support do not, by themselves, secure a place to live.
