ANU Pathway Diplomas 2027: programs, entry and progression
ANU Pathway Diplomas cover business and economics, computing, and politics and international relations, with progression into specified Bachelor degrees subject to the required Diploma GPA. Each Diploma takes 12 months full-time at ANU’s Acton Campus in Canberra and can provide 48 units of credit towards an aligned degree. For 2027, indicative annual tuition is AUD 57,640 for each Diploma.
The pathway is intended for applicants below the Bachelor entry threshold, including those with a selection rank of 70–79.99. Applicants with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for a Bachelor degree and cannot commence a Pathway Diploma.
What the Diploma year includes
Each program is a nested qualification: students study towards an AQF Level 5 Diploma that connects to an aligned Bachelor degree. The Diploma comprises eight courses over two semesters, including ESEN1001 Academic Skills for University Study and level-1000 courses shared with Bachelor students.
Students are full ANU students from the start. Delivery is through a wholly ANU-owned Pathways entity. Classes are in person only, with no remote option, and the current intake is Semester 1 only.
Although the Diploma is a qualification in its own right, the admission arrangement requires it to be packaged with a Bachelor degree. It is not offered for applicants whose intention is solely to complete a one-year Diploma.
Which Bachelor degrees each Diploma leads to
The required GPA depends on the destination degree. The politics and international relations pathway has different thresholds within its aligned degree list.
| Pathway Diploma | Aligned Bachelor degree | Required Diploma GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma of Business and Economics | Bachelor of Accounting | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Business and Economics | Bachelor of Business Administration | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Business and Economics | Bachelor of Commerce | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Business and Economics | Bachelor of Economics | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Business and Economics | Bachelor of Finance | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Computing | Bachelor of Computing | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of Asian Studies | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of International Relations | 4.6 |
| Diploma of Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of International Security Studies | 4.6 |
| Diploma of Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of Political Science | 4.6 |
| Diploma of Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of Public Policy | 4.6 |
The aligned pathway carries one year, or 48 units, of credit into the relevant Bachelor degree. Admission to the Diploma does not itself mean the progression requirement has been met; students must achieve the GPA required for their destination.
The Diploma CRICOS codes are:
- Business and Economics: 121405F
- Computing: 121404G
- Politics and International Relations: 121406E
Academic entry starts at selection rank 70
The minimum selection rank for Diploma entry is 70. No subject prerequisites apply to the Diplomas, and adjustment factors are not applied.
Entry routes also include a graded AQF Certificate IV and the Work and Life Experience Scheme, formerly Special Adult Entry. The pathway accommodates specified senior secondary qualifications from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait.
For the General Secondary Education Certificate known as Tawjihi / Shahadat Al-Thanawaya Al-aama, the stated Diploma requirement is an academic average of 80% plus SAT 1090 or above.
Selected qualification equivalents
These are selected equivalents for the Diploma’s selection rank 70 threshold. They are a partial table, not a complete list of accepted qualifications.
| Qualification | Score at the Diploma threshold |
|---|---|
| Gao-Kao — Shanghai, out of 660 | 446 |
| Gao-Kao — Hainan, out of 900 | 608 |
| Gao-Kao — other, out of 750 | 506 |
| HKDSE | 11 |
| ISC India | 77 |
| IB — Australian schools, November 2022 onwards | 26.75 |
| IB — overseas, or Australian results before November 2022 | 27 |
| GCE A-Levels — best three | 10 |
| GCE A-Levels — best four | 12 |
| SAT | 1090 |
| ACT | 20 |
The qualification, examination system and result date matter when identifying the applicable equivalent. Predicted results are accepted where they are already accepted for Bachelor admission, with an additional Diploma-only provision for Tawjihi / Shahadat Al-Thanawaya Al-aama.
English entry and the 2027 ELICOS limitation
Direct English entry requires IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0, or an equivalent result. This is the same English requirement as undergraduate entry.
ANU ELICOS can be packaged with the pathway. However, the 2027 Guide states that ELICOS applications for Semester 1 2027 are now closed. Applicants considering that intake should distinguish between meeting the direct English requirement and relying on an English-language package.
Tuition covers the Diploma year, not the whole degree sequence
The 2027 indicative annual tuition fee is AUD 57,640 for each Pathway Diploma. This figure covers the Diploma year only; it is not the total cost of the Diploma plus Bachelor sequence.
ANU describes Diploma tuition as aligned with the first year of the corresponding Bachelor degree. Commonwealth supported places may apply for eligible domestic students.
Financial capacity for the packaged Diploma and Bachelor sequence forms part of the stated admission considerations. The annual Diploma fee therefore should not be treated as the budget for the full study plan.
Scholarships differ between Diploma study and progression
Most students are not eligible for the ANU International Achievement Award or the Vice-Chancellor’s Award during the Diploma. Assessment for these awards occurs on articulation, with a Diploma GPA of at least 4.6, equivalent to selection rank 85.
Meeting that GPA threshold does not establish that an award has been granted.
The stated exception is for Pacific Region citizens, who receive a 50% tuition discount under the International Achievement Award from Diploma commencement.
How applications are routed
The application route depends on the applicant’s current study circumstances.
| Applicant circumstances | Application route |
|---|---|
| Onshore and completing Australian Year 12, the IB or NCEA Level 3 | UAC |
| Other international applicants | ANU Application Manager / Studylink |
The listed international application deadline for Semester 1 2027 is 15 December.
For the international packaged pathway, ANU issues one Confirmation of Enrolment for the Diploma and another for the Bachelor degree, supporting one visa application. This describes the enrolment arrangement and does not promise a visa outcome.
Before preparing an application, establish:
- The Diploma and intended aligned Bachelor degree.
- The applicable academic qualification and entry score.
- The English result being used for entry.
- The GPA needed for the intended Bachelor degree.
- Financial capacity for the Diploma and Bachelor sequence.
Support continues through the move into a Bachelor degree
Support begins with pre-commencement enrolment counselling and onboarding. During the Diploma, students have one-to-one academic advice, monitoring of engagement and progress, and proactive intervention where needed.
The support model also includes referrals to campus services and help with the transition from Diploma to Bachelor study. Diploma students have the same access to accommodation as Bachelor students; this is an access provision, not a promise of a room.
Changing the intended Bachelor can change the credit outcome
Students may apply for a non-aligned Bachelor degree after completing the Diploma. Such applications are assessed in the same way as those from students who have completed one year of undergraduate study at ANU.
Credit is then assessed case by case. The full year of credit is not guaranteed when changing to a non-aligned program. The distinction matters when choosing a Diploma: its listed Bachelor destinations provide the defined progression route, while another destination requires a separate admission and credit assessment.
