Applying for a Tax File Number (TFN)

To work in Australia, you generally need a Tax File Number (TFN). You can apply for a TFN online through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website. The application is free, and you will need to provide proof of identity. Once your application is processed, your TFN is usually issued within 28 days.

Annual Tax Return

In Australia, the financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June. If you earned income during this period, you are generally required to lodge a tax return by 31 October. You can lodge your return online using myTax, which is accessible through the ATO website. You may need to declare all income earned in Australia, including wages from part-time work. If you have paid too much tax throughout the year, you may be eligible for a refund.

For international students, it is important to keep records of your income and expenses, as you may be able to claim work-related deductions. If you are unsure about your tax obligations, you can seek help from a registered tax agent.
